The
Commission is a 15-member body
of public-spirited, private citizens
who are knowledgeable and interested
in the area of public welfare.
They meet monthly to discuss,
examine and evaluate public welfare
issues and the programs and operations
of the Department. All meetings
are open to the public.

Community Services Block Grants are appropriations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help communities address poverty issues. States are allocated money and are directed to fund anti-poverty nonprofit and/or public agencies statewide to address the local issues of poverty within their communities.

DPSS
is designated as the Los Angeles
County Operational Area Branch
Coordinator for Care and Shelter.
DPSS is the Operational Area
liaison with private, not-for-profit
human services agencies, including
community based organizations.
DPSS is also the Operational
Area liaison with the grocery
industry.

This
Former Foster Care Children
program will provide full,
no cost Medi-Cal for persons
who were in foster care on
their 18th birthday and who
were released from foster care
due to age. Coverage can continue
until your 21st birthday.

DPSS
has two sections which investigate
fraud. WFP&I investigates
allegations of welfare fraud.
The Internal Affairs Unit investigates
allegations of employee fraud
within the Department.

The mission of the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) is to enrich lives through effective and caring service. DPSS, in commitment to reduce and prevent homelessness among its CalWORKs families, implemented, in April 2004, the DPSS Housing Program. The Program includes a number of benefit and services designed to assist homeless families and families at risk of homelessness to move out of the current situation and into affordable permanent housing. |

benefits and special purpose cash
benefits without affecting their

coordinating their efforts for
the Hurricane Katrina evacuees,
with DPSS taking the lead.

The
Intergovernmental Relations Section
is a part of the Intergovernmental
and Interagency Relations Division
in the Bureau of Program and
Policy. They
are responsible
to coordinate the Department’s
legislative activities. They
coordinate Departmental analyses
and make recommendations to
advance Board Policy on all State
and Federal bills impacting programs
administered by the Department
as well as on proposed State/Federal
regulations.

treatment for Mental Health
and Substance Abuse problems,

the framework for our service

Toy Loan Program is
a free service which allows
children to borrow toys
from a Toy Loan Center
in the same manner in which
they borrow books from
the public library. |

Volunteer & Special
Programs are designed to
recruit volunteers and
develop resources and programs
to enhance and supplement
services to the Department's
clients countywide. |

This
program is the successor
to the current JTPA Summer
Youth programs that will
provide paid work-based
learning opportunities
for 9,000 CalWORKs youths
in Los Angeles County coupled
with functional basic skills,
career planning, employment,
employment readiness skills,
and job placement (includes
summer jobs, retail management,
library jobs, transportation
foundation and LA Youth
at Work). First priority
for these opportunities
would go to CalWORKs teen
parents.
